Governor Wamatangi raises safety concerns after bullet hits neighbour’s roof

Governor Wamatangi said he had attended church in Ruiru and later at CITAM Kiambu Road before he and several leaders stopped at a hotel for tea. He then proceeded to his residence in Kibiku.

Kiambu Governor Kimani Wamatangi has expressed concern for his safety following an alleged shooting incident in which a bullet struck the roof of his neighbour’s house, approximately 50 metres from his residence.

According to his neighbour, Margaret Njeri, the bullet was fired by an unknown person on Sunday afternoon under mysterious circumstances.

She said she had returned home from church when she heard something hit her roof and assumed it was a stone.

“Later on, I noticed a hole in the roof above my children’s bedroom, and upon checking the floor where they play, I found this cartridge. I wondered who could be coming after us. The governor’s residence neighbours my home, and he had been there assessing his farm, so I  wondered if he was the target. Yet the community has no issues with him. He even walks around alone, without his bodyguards,” she said.

Njeri said she informed the governor’s bodyguards the same day and reported the incident at Kibiku Police Station the following day. The matter is recorded under OB number 05/1/12/2025.

Governor Wamatangi said he had attended church in Ruiru and later at CITAM Kiambu Road before he and several leaders stopped at a hotel for tea. He then proceeded to his residence in Kibiku.

“I entered the house briefly and then stepped out to assess my shamba. While there, I saw some people logging trees and engaged them, advising them against it. I then went back to the house, and shortly afterwards, I was informed of the incident,” he recalled.

The governor urged calm and called on the police to thoroughly investigate the matter.

“The time between when I was at the shamba and when the bullet was fired is very short. What was the shooter aiming at at 3:30 pm? There is no clear report on what happened or who was behind it, but we will not fall for intimidation tactics or send people into panic. Still, we must be cautious. It is very unfortunate that the incident occurred just about 50 metres from my house, less than 20 metres from where I was standing, and worse still, that the bullet fell through the roof of my neighbour’s children’s bedroom, nearly killing them,” he said.

He noted that it was crucial for security agencies to establish the truth.

“We need to find out who is behind this, where the shot was fired from, the motive, and so on. The cartridge is here and can be subjected to tests to determine its source and the holder of the firearm used,” he said.

Kiambu County Assembly Majority Leader Godfrey Mucheke linked the incident to politics.

“It saddens us that such an incident can occur in such a quiet village, especially with police officers located so close by. When asked, they claim not to know the source of the bullet,” he said.

Mucheke called for enhanced security for the governor and MCAs, claiming their lives have been threatened in the past by leaders from the area.
